United issue Rooney statement

Manchester United have called on their fans to be patient over the future of Wayne Rooney.

The striker's position has been thrown into doubt by the announcement that he does not want to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
His current deal is due to expire at the end of next season and the England international has indicated that at present he does not wish to renew it.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has met the club's chief executive David Gill to discuss the matter which has dominated the headlines.
And the club issued a holding statement saying: "We are aware that there is intense public and media interest on the club at the moment, but there are no developments of note to report," read an official club statement, released at 7pm on Thursday.
"I can confirm a number of meetings have taken place, including with the player's representative.
"The outcome of those meetings will become clear in the near future. In the meantime, fans are asked to be patient."
